The time when woke meant getting up in the morning. Before safe spaces were invented. Before words like consent and respect became part of everyday language between the sexes.
Before #MeToo.
The world of professional sport seems reluctant to move into the 21st century, with some stars (male) unaware the days of shagging in the shower and boasting about your weekly scores off the pitch is no longer acceptable. For them, sex is just another sport, and the women involved utterly disposable commodities.
These cavemen are finally getting called out.
When Spain’s women won the World Cup, how did Spanish football President Luis Rubiales react? Standing next to the Queen of Spain, he grabbed his crotch and jiggled his bits up and down like a randy dachshund for millions of viewers to enjoy. Rubiales remains utterly unrepentant and says he was simply congratulating his pal Jorge Vilda, the team coach.

If women do well at something, we don’t feel the need to celebrate by heaving up our skirts and poking around in our pants in public. Funny that.
Rubiales then went on to plant a slobbering congratulatory kiss on star player Jenni Hermoso – without her consent. Following national outrage, he has been suspended by FIFA for three months while the Spanish Football Federation try to get rid of him. The winning team’s coach – Jorge Vila – was sacked on Tuesday after he refused to condemn Rubiales’ behaviour. Vila’s coaching style had already upset 15 members of his team, who had walked out – just three returned to play in the tournament’s final.

But unsporting and sexist behaviour isn’t just rampant in football.
Closer to home we have some local cavemen who see nothing wrong in their attitudes either.
Read this quote – ‘I was very specific how I did it, so it was three on my off days, one when I was training, and the night before a game would be a night off. Sometimes.’
That’s not about cocktails, or drugs. It’s about sex. Not about quality. Just quantity. Emotionally bankrupt, this crass confession suggests the writer lacked any empathy for the partners involved.

They may have been named at the time, if a photographer managed to capture the liaison, but dragging it up decades later is unnecessary.
To make matters worse, Danny’s wife Victoria justifies his revelations by claiming he has not said anything that we didn’t know already. As a mental health campaigner, she must realise that being named in this context without being pre-warned or asked for consent, is thoroughly upsetting.
Victoria has tweeted ‘I sincerely hope that this spotlight doesn’t cause any discomfort or negative emotions for the women involved’.
Caroline Flack is dead. Kelly Brook is married and has a successful career on radio and television. Lindsay Lohan has moved on. Kirsty Gallacher has appeared on Strictly and currently has a show on Smooth radio. Katie Price has other issues and a very challenging son who requires a huge amount of love and attention. I’m sure they are all thrilled to be ticked off on Danny Cipriani’s bucket list along with every willing female he met on the way to the bus stop or dry cleaners.
As for Kelly Brook, Danny claims that after they split up and she dated his team-mate Thom, she became pregnant, but suffered a miscarriage. Unsportingly, Cipriani reveals that Kelly and he enjoyed a secret romantic break during this time, behind Thom’s back.
It’s as if the publishers said to Danny that a book about rugby won’t sell enough. Who cares about that kind of ball control? A book about your struggles with alcohol and magic mushrooms – well, there are plenty of famous people who’ve told that story. But if you can name as many celebrity bonks as possible we could be onto a best seller.

In the book, he’s frank about his struggles with depression and loneliness, admitting he drank to try and ‘fit in’. On one team outing in 2013 he dressed up as a WWE wrestler, visited 15 pubs in Leeds, and ended up getting hit by a bus and tearing a ligament in his knee. He was convicted of drink driving in 2016 and arrested for being drunk in Jersey in 2018. He admits he dabbled with cocaine and Tramadol, and took so many mushrooms in 2020 he thought his wife was trying to kill him, fell into some stone garden steps and ended up in hospital again.

This time, he went to rehab – for a week.
Now, Danny seeks to make amends, in his own way, admitting that the days of treating women like disposable coffee cups are long gone.
He must have been so busy – finding the raw material to feed his score card – searching for potential partners everywhere he went. From a Cheeky girl, to a coffee shop worker, to models and actresses, he certainly cast his net wide, targeting married women because they wouldn’t blab.
Now, he says the women were just ‘counters in a game’.
But it’s a game that didn’t need to be told, Danny. In the telling, you have not only caused hurt to the people involved, but you’ve failed to justify your actions by citing ‘hurt’ and personal trauma.
