DAILY MAIL COMMENT: Arrest the harm caused by the woke police
In recent times, it has not always been easy to figure out the primary purpose of our police. Are they the ardent and uncritical champions of woke causes – or the enforcers of law and order?
Uniformed bobbies skateboarded with Extinction Rebellion as central London ground to a halt. They ‘took the knee’ in front of Black Lives Matter protesters.
But when frustrated motorists tried to drag Just Stop Oil zealots off the roads they had blocked this week, officers sprang into action – to threaten them with arrest.
Whose side are the police on? Apparently not that of ordinary people who adhere to the law. But should we be surprised? For some time commanders’ priorities have been skewed. Police appear less interested in criminal justice than social justice.
The truth is, many chief constables are in thrall to the woke agenda, where political correctness and identity politics are as important as keeping the streets safe.

We have seen it with such absurdities as people receiving a knock on the door from officers for the ‘crime’ of misgendering a trans activist during a Twitter spat.
Yet at the same time, there has been an explosion in knife crime and detection rates for most offences are at pitifully low levels.
So the Mail welcomes the latest blast of common sense from Home Secretary Suella Braverman. She says too many forces have abandoned impartiality in favour of partisan political positions – such as appearing to support the interests of eco-cultists.
When this happens, it damages public trust, making policing more difficult. Nor should officers intervene in heated social media discussions, such as on trans rights. Over-policing legitimate debate undermines free speech – and badly erodes democracy.
The guiding principle of our police service is it should act without fear or favour – not pander to causes it sees as achingly trendy.
Scrap this terrible tax
When will the Chancellor stop burying his head in the sand and accept axing VAT-free shopping for tourists has been a disaster?
Every day fresh evidence emerges that Jeremy Hunt’s perverse decision not to reinstate this incentive is costing Britain countless millions, damaging businesses, jeopardising jobs and denying the Treasury a fortune in tax receipts.
New research shows wealthy American and Chinese travellers are flocking instead to the Continent to spend their money.

Meanwhile, the boss of Marks & Spencer has warned London is ‘on life support’ as ending the exemption has left the capital floundering compared to European rivals.
Instead of a magnet for business, the UK risks becoming globally uncompetitive. The easiest way for Mr Hunt to start addressing this fiasco? Scrap the hated tourist tax.
A damaging judgment
The historic purpose of the ‘cab rank’ principle, under which a barrister must take a case if they are free to do so, no matter how unpalatable, is to preserve the fairness of our justice system.
The Bar Council ought to understand this. Instead, it will allow activist lawyers to pick and choose their cases – refusing to prosecute eco-anarchists or represent oil firms, on the grounds of conscience.
By cravenly caving in to these courtroom narcissists, it has driven a coach and horses through the code – damaging the public interest and the sacred rule of law.
The laudable Illegal Migrants Bill, which aims to stop people risking their lives crossing the Channel in small boats with the threat of sending them to Rwanda, was approved by MPs last night.
Inevitably, Labour carped about the Government’s failure to tackle the crisis – then voted against this solution.
