Former Tesla employees used skills they learned under Elon Musk to design a mini home on wheels for the ultimate glamping experience – and it could compete with the Cybertruck trailer add-on.
Lightship’s L1 travel sleeps up to six inside the 27-foot-long cabin that also features all the amenities – from a full kitchen to a complete bathroom and sitting area that transforms into beds.
The San Francisco-based firm touts itself as America’s first all-electric recreational vehicle company, which aims to replace traditional trailers that rely on ‘smelly, noisy, gas or propane generators’ that hinder the experience of traveling outdoors.
Lightship uses a clean-sheet approach with three times more aerodynamic design than a traditional travel trailer, allowing it to be easily towed by a 300-mile range electric vehicle.
The Lightship L1 starts at $125,000 or $118,400 after available tax credit and is available now for a $500 reservation. Production is expected in late 2024.

Tesla’s Cybertruck, which starts at nearly $40,000, offers a $24,000 ‘Space Camper’ that turns the pickup into a mobile home.
The device is slotted neatly into the vehicle’s truck bed.
When activated, it extends outwards and upwards, creating enough room for two people to sleep on an inbuilt bed.
Though it’s an enclosed camping space, the attachment can also open up on one side to allow drivers to sleep under the stars in ‘stargazing mode’ if they so desire.
However, the Space Camper is more than half the size of the Lightship L1.
Lightship co-founder and president Toby Kraus said in a statement: ‘With 90 percent of the market comprising of towable RVs, we began by creating an all-electric travel trailer unlike any RV available today, and that is just the beginning.
‘We are leveraging our expertise in automotive EV development and design to build a brand that creates delightful outdoor travel experiences for everyone and brings even more people into the pastime of RVing.’
Lightship L1 is eight feet, six inches wide and stands six feet and nine inches tall, but when in camper mode, it reaches 10 feet high.
Camper mode raises the trailer’s roof to allow people to move freely inside while standing.

Motortrend spotted a Lightship L1 in the wild at the Electrify Expo in Long Beach, California and reported it features a minimalist modern exterior with a sleek kitchen.
The kitchen features a stove, oven, small refrigerator and deep sink.
However, Motortrend said the ‘bathroom seemed like an afterthought’ compared to the rest of the interior, while the company calls it a ‘relaxing spa bathroom.’
Images snapped by the outlet show what looks like accent painting from the 90s, pink with specks of even brighter pink and white paint.
Lightship said the countertops are made of ocean waste, which likely gives it the retro vibe.
There is a tiny sink near a toilet and a standup shower to the side, but one might note that it is, after all, a trailer.

The founders used their Tesla expertise to design Lightship L1 with a self-propulsion system featuring an electric powertrain with up to 80 kWh of onboard battery capacity.

Porsche also teased the idea of getting into the trailer business with a luxury camper that fits in a garage.
In March, the German carmaker and travel trailer manufacturer AirStream unveiled a concept that features sleeping and cooking quarters, storage and walking space.
The 16-foot-long Airstream Studio F. A. concept has seating that transforms from a dining space into a full-size bed, and in the back is a kitchenette complete with a sink, stove and storage space.
Pricing for the silver bullet-looking trailer has not yet been revealed.

An AirStream spokesperson told DailyMail.com: ‘The collaboration was designed as an innovation exercise to help us think about how we can build on Airstream’s design DNA to create products for tomorrow.
‘It is possible that some of the concept’s features and innovations will be included in future models of current Airstream products.’
While the cost is unknown, AirStream is a top name in the trailer industry and sells its designs from $46,000 to more than $188,000.
The most expensive camper is $3 million – the Marchi Mobile’s EleMMent Palazzo Superior.
