Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy criticized the imminent indictment of former President Donald Trump, calling it “un-American” and a “dark moment in American history.”
Ramaswamy held a press conference Saturday to condemn the rumors Trump may be arrested this week, calling on the Manhattan district attorney to drop his political crusade against the 45th president.
“This is about principle, not a person. This is about our country, not one man. The silence from the rest of the GOP field is deafening,” he said. “That is not the America I know. That is not America my parents came to. That is not the America our founding fathers set in motion 250 years ago. That is the stuff of a Banana Republic.”

“I don’t care whether you root for Trump or don’t. If you root for the integrity of our constitutional republic, then you need to be on the side of being real clear that we cannot have politically empowered prosecutors eliminating the opposition of a ruling party using an arrest power,” he continued.
“It is a sad day in America, it is a dark day in America if you have the ruling party of this country using police power to arrest its political opposition. That would be the beginning of the end as we know it,” he added.

Ramaswamy offered a hypothetical scenario to bring perspective to this moment in history, asking how Democrats would have reacted if George W. Bush had tried to eliminate his rival John Kerry on a campaign finance technicality.
“Liberals in this country would have cried bloody murder and they would have been right,” he said.
He also reiterated his disappointment in the Republican field who have yet to also decry the blatant political persecution waged by Biden’s government, calling on GOP hopefuls Nikki Haley and Gov. Ron DeSantis (Fla.) to join him for a press conference Sunday morning calling for Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg to abandon his plans to indict Trump.
Although Ramaswamy is not the only Republican to condemn the news of a possible indictment for Trump, he is the first GOP presidential candidate to do so.
This comes after Trump on Truth Social called on supporters to protest his looming indictment.
“Illegal leaks from a corrupt and highly political Manhattan District Attorneys office, which has allowed new records to be set in violent crime and whose leader is funded by George Soros, indicate that, with no crime being able to be proven, and based on an old and fully debunked (by numerous other prosecutors) fairytale, the far and away leading Republican candidate and former President of the United States of America, will be ARRESTED on Tuesday of next week,” Trump posted.
