A new Biden “efficiency” regulation would effectively ban HALF of all gas stoves in America, according to a Department of Energy analysis.
A recent report by the DOE found that half of all gas stoves in the U.S. would not comply with this first-ever efficiency regulation proposal by the Biden administration on cooking appliances.
From E&E News:
DOE says the cooking regulation will preserve some market share for gas stoves that have at least one high-input rate burner and continuous cast iron grates, two features that DOE determined are priorities for the public. Both features use a lot of energy.
DOE mentioned the 50 percent projection in a memo called a notice of data availability released last week to present new analysis on market impacts and answer questions lobbed by industry,” E&E News reported. “In that document, DOE said 40 percent of the current gas stove market does not have those two features and would likely comply with the proposed regulation of 1,204 thousand British thermal units (kBtu) of energy use annually.
Companies that manufacture and sell gas stoves did not respond to the 50% projection positively.
“They were desperate to show better numbers because their analysis is such a poor justification of what they’re proposing,” said Jill Notini, vice president of communications and marketing at the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers.
“It’s like they’re in such a rush to regulate these products, and they’re trying to cover their tracks,” Notini said. “But they’re doing an incredibly poor job of it. We have never seen this level of sloppy analysis from DOE before. We are not against standards. We’ve been at the table since the very beginning.”
Notini also pointed to a data point in a 525-page technical support document released by DOE in December showing 20 of 21 DOE-tested models failed to comply with the energy output threshold set by the proposed rule — 96% of the market.
That figure grabbed the attention of Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), who recently warned the DOE in a letter that Biden’s proposed rule would essentially ban 96% of gas stoves.
“The Department clearly states in the Proposed Rule…that only 4% of the current market share meet the extremely high new proposed standard,” Daines wrote to DOE Secretary Jennifer Granholm. “This means that, according to the Department’s own analysis published in the Proposed Rule, that 96% of existing gas cooking tops would be banned from future manufacturing and sales.”
“Obviously, this contradicts President Biden’s position as stated in the hearing by an assistant secretary of the Department that issued the rule,” he continued.
The Biden administration had walked back its plan to ban gas stoves earlier this month in the wake of fierce backlash.
That led to Andrew Light, DOE assistant secretary for international affairs, assuring Republican lawmakers in a congressional hearing last week that the Biden administration did not want to ban gas stoves.
But the conflicting messages between the Biden team and the DOE’s memo have caused frustration, Daines said.
“This has led to greater confusion among lawmakers, manufacturers, and consumers. It is extremely important, as I stated during the hearing, that the public understands the effect of the Proposed Rule so they are both able to make official comments and prepare for what could be a substantial reduction in gas cooking appliances available to consumers,” Daines said.
“When there are differing and conflicting data points and when statements during multiple congressional hearings are not being answered effectively, then it is incumbent on the Department to clarify these issues for congressional members and alert consumers and manufacturers of the real impacts of a proposed rule,” he added.
The cooking efficiency rule must be finalized by January 2024, according to a court settlement.
So instead of having a public debate and subsequent democratic vote about gas stoves, the Biden administration appears to be moving ahead with a more bureaucratic method of imposing its climate agenda.
