Perhaps the best-known quote from Charles DIckens’ classic, “A Tale of Two Cities,” is this snippet.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…
The full quote continues as a much longer sentence describing a situation where depending on one’s perspective, it was either a wonderful time of hope and light or an era of bleakness and darkness. In a very real sense, Dickens could be describing the times of many historical periods, including our present time in America.
For example, let us examine the present administration as “led” by the unduly selected Chief Executive of the United States and its two different policies toward national sovereignty. In one case, it is a time to defend national sovereignty, in another case, it is a time to discard it.
Defending national sovereignty for Ukraine
Unless you have been hiding under a rock for the past few weeks you will know that there is suddenly a border crisis in Ukraine. Apparently, Russia is planning to invade Ukraine at any moment and has amassed about 100,000 troops on the border for that purpose. However, there is more to this story that many may not realize.
As pointed out in the video, the logistics of the situation make the perceived threat of a Russian invasion into Ukraine highly unlikely. There isn’t really any imminent threat of this. In fact, this is probably a maneuver by Vladimir Putin to negotiate certain guarantees that will preclude Ukraine from joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, that is aligned in opposition to Russian expansion.
The response from the Biden administration has been to put some military units, such as the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division on alert status and indicate that some American troops will be sent into NATO member nations in Eastern Europe in preparation to defend the Ukrainian border against Russia. This move would put American troops in a position to quickly defend Ukraine’s sovereignty should a military strike by Russia come about.
Additionally, we have increased military aid to Ukraine, including supplying them with arms, ammunition, and even new anti-tank Javelin missiles to support efforts to defend Ukraine’s eastern border against invasion. Perhaps none of this will result in an actual military engagement, and we can all hope and pray it doesn’t.
However, the fact remains that America is very concerned about the national sovereignty of Ukraine and willing to spend billions of dollars and send our troops to help keep Ukrainian borders secure. Whether or not all of these efforts on our part are necessary is debatable, but it misses a very important point.
If we are willing to do all of this to ensure Ukrainian sovereignty, why are we doing almost the exact opposite on our own southern border? Why are we so fervent in defense of Ukraine’s borders and so determined to discard the defense of our own border against the illegal immigrant invasion of America?
Discarding national sovereignty for America
The defining characteristic of national sovereignty is the security of a nation’s border. Without secure borders a nation simply cannot continue to exist and becomes subject to whatever groups of people wish to invade its space and endanger its citizens, and that is precisely what we are witnessing in real-time here in America.
First of all, in 2021 there were a record amount of illegal border crossings into America. More than 2 million encounters with illegal immigrants were recorded by the Department of Homeland Security last year alone.
Some might retort with a stance of “so what?” This is just more people coming into our country, albeit illegally, so how is that a threat to us?
Set aside the fact that this becomes a huge drain on our public resources that are supposed to be used for American citizens. There are more serious threats to America that accompany such a large number of illegals invading the country.
Seizures of dangerous drugs like fentanyl are soaring, and migrants are surging in even during what used to be quiet months, and they’re coming from much further afield than ever before. More than 44% of encounters with unauthorized migrants in December were with people from beyond Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. A year ago that number was just 11%. Analysts say the Biden administration’s policy changes, including canceling get-tough Trump policies, reviving catch-and-release of migrants at the border and curtailing the ability of ICE to go after people in the interior have convinced would-be illegal immigrants they can make it into the U.S.
Moreover, there are now increasing numbers of illegal aliens crossing American borders who are on our own official terror watchlist. In addition to this, we are witnessing more and more dangerous gang members, such as those of MS-13, taking advantage of the virtually open southern border and illegally crossing into U.S. territory.
We should also recognize that such open-border policies have greatly increased the likelihood that human smuggling and trafficking is occurring. In a January 6th article from Fox News,
“When you increase the number of people being smuggled, the increase in trafficking goes along with that, so if they’re really, really serious not just about addressing and reacting to trafficking, if they’re really serious about trying to prevent it, they’d secure our borders,” former acting Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Mark Morgan said in an interview Wednesday.
While this does not appear to be a planned invasion of America via the southern border [although we shouldn’t rule out that possibility], the fact is this will translate into real harm being done to the nation by these invaders and specifically to multitudes of citizens around the nation. In fact, it is posing a current danger to many who live in the border states.

It is apparent that this is a real, palpable threat to the citizens of our nation. As this courageous woman who is now running for the State Legislature in Arizona mentioned, it is as if we have “ceded” 90 miles of American soil to illegal aliens and the chaos that accompanies them!
What is the Biden administration doing about this? If you said the answer was ‘nothing,’ you would be mistaken.
The fact is that this administration is actually enabling and encouraging this illegal alien invasion with their policies! Witness, for example, the following recent announcement by the Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
Did you catch that? Our federal laws that help ensure the security of our borders, that enhance our national sovereignty, will no longer be enforced by the very agency specifically tasked with their enforcement!
So while we warn Russia and their 100,000 troops that they must not violate the sovereignty of a foreign nation, we are also telling our own citizens that we invite multiple millions of criminals, many of whom are determined to destroy America, to come on in. This is an insane and immoral turn of events created by an insane and immoral administration, and we should pray and speak out against it or we could easily be ushering in the end of America as a nation.
