When we first met Seema (Sarita Choudhury) all the way back in And Just Like That… Season 1, she made light of the fact that her name means “boundary” considering she has none. Which is why it’s fitting that she finally gets her own juicy nightmare Sex and the City-esque sex story to share with us and the gang. In And Just Like That… Season 2 Episode 5 “Trick or Treat,” Seema starts hooking up with a nameless guy (Daniel Cosgrove) who needs a little extra help in the bedroom. Specifically, he uses a motorized penis pump to combat erectile dysfunction. However, that’s not what makes this one episode-and-done love interest a total dud in my or Seema’s estimation. When he comes before Seema and doesn’t offer to finish her — as is defined by sex etiquette!* — he becomes insulted when she takes out a vibrator to get the job done. He can use a motorized machine to help him reach a climax, but Seema’s slim gilt vibrator is apparently off-limits.
Seema rightfully is done with this bozo after this happens, but what was his deal, how did the two meet, and why were both me and Seema so aghast at this guy’s overblown reaction to her vibrator??
Seema meets “Pump-Gin Guy” — I watched the episode back and never caught a real name! — at an upscale hotel bar. She explains early in the episode to Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and newly single Nya (Karen Pittman) that it is the place to meet decent single men because they’d need money and taste to afford a room there. While Nya succeeds in landing a sexy one night stand with a hot dude, Seema finds herself pulled into penis pump guy’s world. But how?
At first, “Pump-Gin Guy” seems on the level. He’s flirting with Seema and the two wind up having a half hour of foreplay at her place before he pauses to come clean about something. Sometimes, he says, he struggles with ED. Not an issue for Seema, as she believes things are already hot and heavy enough to conquer erectile dysfunction. However he soon produces a parcel. Within it is the kind of penis pump that was a visual gag in the original Austin Powers flick. As he pumps himself up, the usually unflappable Seema looks stunned. However, she’s not turned off. At least not yet.
As she tells Carrie over the phone the next day, Seema is willing to overlook the “bizarre intermission” during sex because it’s always something. They at least had B+ sex and some laughs. Well, they did until they don’t.
The next time we see Seema with her nameless dude, he is orgasming hard. She, however, is not. So she takes out her vibrator from her nightstand and begins to go to work. Rando penis pump guy is offended. Seema counters that she has to wake up to his dishwashed pump in her kitchen sink, so what’s the big deal. He tries to say it’s different, arguing that her vibrator, you know, vibrates. To which Seema counters with an impression of his pump. “Not cool. Not cool!” he says, getting up to leave the show forever.
My hot take on this is that while Seema could have been more tactful in her approach, she didn’t do anything wrong. If she’s going to compromise in the bedroom by allowing him to use the pump, he ought to let her use a vibrator. Both are mechanisms designed to promote peak sexual pleasure. Furthermore, I truly believe it’s bad manners to not help a partner get off if you come early. Pump-gin guy took the arrival of the vibrator as a dig on him and not a fun challenge to engage Seema in a different physical way.
While I get why Seema’s hookup could have felt insecure about the vibrator, I think ultimately Seema was in the right. She has every right to enjoy her consensual sexual encounters with nameless gin reps. And every right to end things with a guy who doesn’t think fair is fair, when it comes to orgasms or devices designed to enhance them.
*Okay, there’s no technical Miss Manners guide to hookups, but every good sexual partner should offer this service. When someone does not, it’s a red flag!
