Prince Harry got into “a lot of trouble” with Meghan Markle early on in their relationship due to differences in American and British vernacular.
The Duke of Sussex shared the anecdote while taking the “Colbert Questionert” on Tuesday’s episode of “The Late Show,” during which he answered a speed round of 15 questions — including his favorite sandwich.
When Harry, 38, confused Stephen Colbert with the words “toasty” and “toasting machine,” meaning “grilled sandwich” and “panini press,” respectively, the royal noted that he has to be “so careful” about his verbiage.
“The Americanisms to the Britishisms are very different,” he explained. “Got me and my wife into a lot of trouble at the beginning of our relationship.”
Harry and the late-night TV host, 58, subsequently began spitballing language discrepancies, from “horse riding” and “horseback riding” to “pavement” and “sidewalk,” during the segment, which was taped when the “Spare” author appeared on “The Late Show” in January.
Harry has previously revealed how “cultural differences” and a “language barrier” played a role in a past argument with Markle.
“Meg said something I took the wrong way,” he recalled in his bombshell memoir.
The former military pilot felt “overly sensitive” at the time and “snapped at” the 41-year-old, speaking to her “harshly” and “cruelly.”
He wrote, “As the words left my mouth, I could feel everything in the room come to a stop.”
Markle, who was “calm and quiet” in her response, told her husband “that she would never stand for being spoken to like that,” leading Harry to seek therapy.
“[My anger] came from somewhere deep inside, somewhere that needed to be excavated, and it was obvious that I could use some help with the job,” he explained.
The prince, who has been married to Markle since May 2018, referenced the “Suits” alum later in Tuesday’s questionnaire, saying her scent is his “favorite smell.”
He and the former actress kicked off their romance in July 2016 and now share son Archie, 3, and daughter Lilibet, 1.
The family of four live in California, having left the United Kingdom in 2020 and exited their royal roles the following year.
The couple have since been outspoken about their strained relationship with Harry’s family members, from an interview with Oprah Winfrey to a Netflix docuseries, “Harry & Meghan.”
When it comes to their family’s future, Harry told Colbert that the rest of his life can be described with the words “freedom,” “happiness,” “clarity,” “space” and “love.”
