A Republican congressman from Florida unveiled articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden on Friday, alleging he was deeply tied to allegations and investigations surrounding his son Hunter.
Rep. Greg Steube, a member of the House’s far-right Freedom Caucus, alleged that Biden was complicit in his family members’ business machinations and took steps to protect them from the legal fallout.
“It’s long past time to impeach Joe Biden,” Steube said in a statement. “The evidence continues to mount by the day – the Biden Crime Family has personally profited off Joe’s government positions through bribery, threats, and fraud.”
“Joe Biden must not be allowed to continue to sit in the White House, selling out our country.”
Steube laid out four articles of impeachment: abuse of power, obstruction of justice, fraud and financial involvement in drugs and prostitution.
The first alleges that Hunter and first brother James Biden sold access to Joe Biden while he served as vice president during the Obama administration. The president and the White House have vehemently denied this, insisting that he never “talked business” with his son’s partners.
Second, Steube alleges that the “Biden campaign improperly colluded with Justice Department” to interfere with the federal probe of Hunter.
He cited IRS whistleblower testimony claiming that the inquiry was plagued by favoritism.
A plea deal brokered between Hunter and federal prosecutors imploded in court last month. On Friday, the Justice Department announced that Delaware US Attorney David Weiss would be given special counsel authority in the Hunter case.
Third, Steube alleges that family members such as James Biden “recruited” investors on “false and fraudulent pretenses” with the specter of access to President Biden.
Finally, Steube pointed to the “comingled and intertwined finances” between Joe and Hunter Biden, who has acknowledged his problems with drug and sex addiction. He alleged that “between 2010 and 2019 thousands of dollars of Biden family money was spent on illegal drug transactions and prostitution.”
The White House has sharply and broadly rebutted impeachment talk, and been adamant that Republicans lack a smoking gun showing a direct link between the president and any illegal activity or family business dealings.
“They are prioritizing their own extreme, far-right political agenda at the expense of focusing on what really matters to the American people: working together to make their lives better,” a White House spokesman said in a recent memo.
“Instead of pursuing this shameless and baseless impeachment stunt, House Republicans and Speaker McCarthy should join the President to work on continuing to bring down inflation and lower costs, create jobs, and grow the economy.”
Steube’s push for impeachment comes as congressional Republicans turn up the heat on investigations of the Biden family’s overseas business dealings.
On Wednesday, the Oversight Committee highlighted financial records and revealed that the Biden family and its allies raked in at least $20 million from foreign sources including in Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.
Top GOP brass has treaded a tad more cautiously on the subject of impeachment. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, for instance, has urged caution, contending that “impeachment ought to be rare.”
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, meanwhile, has floated the possibility of launching an impeachment inquiry if congressional investigators continue to uncover more damaging information on the Bidens.
“We’ve only followed where the information has taken us. But Hannity, this is rising to the level of impeachment inquiry, which provides Congress the strongest power to get the rest of the knowledge and information needed,” McCarthy told Fox News’ Sean Hannity last month.
He later clarified that he was not backing impeachment, but merely expressing openness to an inquiry at some point down the line, depending on what GOP investigators dig up.
Other Republicans such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Lauren Boebert (R-Col.), and Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) have all previously introduced articles of impeachment against Biden.
Most of the articles of impeachment they’ve presented center around situation at the US-Mexico border.
On Friday, Steube also unveiled the HUNTER Act, demanding more information about the investigation into a small bag of cocaine that was recently found in a secure area of the White House.
“The American people deserve answers. My legislation demands information on the closed investigation into the cocaine found at the White House in July and focuses on how Congress can provide oversight to prevent future illicit usage of controlled substances in the White House,” he said.
