Drew Barrymore skipped over the high-profile celebrity interviews and her typical Drew’s News segment to welcome “renowned OBGYN” Dr. Suzanne Gilberg-Lenz to The Drew Barrymore Show for a candid conversation on sexual health.
When an 18-year-old audience member revealed that she was “really nervous” about getting a Pap smear in the future, the duo attempted to make her feel better about it with their own demonstration involving a powdered donut and a speculum, which Barrymore referred to as the “duck clamp.”
Gilberg-Lenz went on to explain that the doctor will “lube” up the speculum, before she stuck it in the center of the donut — which was acting as the vagina — and swabbed the inside.
Later on in the segment, audience members were surprised with a special guest appearance by Abbott Elementary star Lisa Ann Walter, who had her own questions to ask the doctor — and her own personal experience to share on top of that.
“My question is: as we get older in life, we tend to face problems that people don’t talk about very much,” she said. “And one of them is: what happens when your vagina dies?”
Walter added, “My doctor kind of said that it sort of dies. But I think what they mean is as women approach menopause, it gets drier. But that’s such a dirty word.”
The Parent Trap star revealed that her doctor — who she referred to as “lovely” — told her that the vagina can atrophy if it’s not used regularly.
“She put the speculum in for the Pap smear and went like this [creaking sound],” Walter joked. “She’s hilarious. I gave her a high-five. I thought it was funny.”
Luckily, Gilberg-Lenz had a slew of suggestions for a “maintenance regimen” including various “hormones” and “creams,” to which Barrymore replied, “I love these conversations. This is awesome. I’m so into this.”
