Alec Baldwin Gets A Charge Dropped But Still Faces Prison Time For Shooting Incident

Actor Alec Baldwin’s charges have been reduced in the fatal shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and director Joel Souza, leading to a reduced possible prison tenure for the 30 Rock actor who portrayed President Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live. Baldwin reportedly held an object that fired and killed Hutchins during the making of the Western movie Rust. Baldwin has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the case.

Prosecutors in Santa Fe, New Mexico dropped a firearm enhancement charge and the result is that Baldwin now faces 18 months of incarceration, whereas if convicted under that firearm charge he would have faced a 5-year minimum prison sentence on that charge alone. The argument put forth in Baldwin’s defense is that the firearm enhancement charge pertained to a law that became effective after the shooting incident. He is still charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter.

Baldwin was a producer of the aborted Western film Rust, and there were reportedly safety concerns on the set that led to a labor dispute.
