Anthony Dwayne McRae, a 43-year-old convicted felon, has been identified as the man responsible for the shooting at Michigan State University on Monday night.
The violent act resulted in the deaths of three people, while five others were left critically injured.
According to reports, McRae shot himself miles away from the campus while confronted by the police.
He was released from prison in May 2021 after serving an 18-month sentence for possessing a loaded firearm in a vehicle.
Officials say that no known motive for the mass shooting and no connection to the university has been found. All classes, sports, and other activities have been canceled for 48 hours.
The identities of the victims have not been revealed yet, as their families have not been notified, according to the station.
McRae had been residing with his father on the north side of Lansing, Michigan, for the past year, as per various reports.
“He’s never done any harm to anyone,” neighbor Megan Bender said of McRae’s father, Mike McRae. “He’s just an old man, minds his business.”
Megan Bender, a neighbor of McRae’s father, speculated that McRae was on his way home after the shooting when he was confronted by the police.
She expressed her relief that McRae had not made it home after listening to police reports on a scanner overnight. The shooting started at an academic building, later moving to the student union, a popular spot for students to study or eat together, according to The Associated Press.
Students hid wherever they could as first responders searched the campus for the shooter.
“This truly has been a nightmare we’re living tonight,” said Chris Rozman, interim deputy chief of the campus police department.
