Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has been discharged from the hospital after sustaining a concussion from a fall last week and is headed to rehab for inpatient physical therapy.
The Kentucky Republican, 81, was admitted to George Washington University Hospital after he tripped and fell at a private dinner at the Waldorf Astoria, formerly the Trump International Hotel, The Hill reported.
His staff released carefully worded statements that appeared to play down the seriousness of the fall.
However, Doctors later confirmed Mitch McConnell suffered a fractured rib from the fall amid news he would need to attend rehab.
“Leader McConnell’s concussion recovery is proceeding well,” McConnell spokesman David Pop said, according to Yahoo.
“At the advice of his physician, the next step will be a period of physical therapy at an inpatient rehabilitation facility before he returns home,” Pop added.
“Over the course of treatment this weekend, the Leader’s medical team discovered that he also suffered a minor rib fracture on Wednesday, for which he is also being treated. The Leader and Secretary Chao are deeply thankful for the skilled medical care, prayers and kindness they have received,” Pop said.
McConnell has a limp that stems from childhood polio, making him prone to falls.
In 2019, Senate Minority Leader injured his shoulder from a fall.
In 2020, McConnell’s face was deeply bruised in an unexplained incident.
He also had heart bypass surgery in 2003.
Meanwhile, Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he still needed to talk to McConnell.
“I’m trying to get an update on the senator. I know he tripped last night but I don’t have any new information,” McCarthy told reporters.
“Hopefully I’ll be able to talk to him today.”McConnell has been Republican Leader since 2007, and the Senate Majority Leader from 2015 to 2021.
