Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador rushed to defend former President Donald Trump amid his ongoing legal battle with Manhattan DA’s office, saying Democrats are using a potential indictment to stop him from running in 2024 and becoming president.
“Right now, former President Trump is declaring that they are going to arrest him,” López Obrador said, Newsweek reported.
“If that were the case… it would be so that his name doesn’t appear on the ballot,” he said.
While López Obrador often disagrees with Trump, he outlined the politically motivated attacks on the former president as an instrument to stop him from running in 2024.
The news comes as Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg weighs whether to bring charges against the former president.
The indictment could see Trump appear in court as early as next week.
If Trump is indicated today, the U.S. Secret Service and the NYPD will move to get him to surrender.
López Obrador also noted that he himself has also suffered attempts to prevent him from becoming president.
“I say this because I too have suffered from the fabrication of a crime, when they didn’t want me to run,” López Obrador said at the press conference. “And this is completely anti-democratic…. Why not allow the people to decide?”
Trump’s attorneys would immediately begin negotiating the terms of Trump’s court appearance if an indictment is brought forward.
According to Fox News, at least one more witness is expected to appear before the grand jury on Wednesday, but it is unclear who the witnesses are.
The potential charges stem from the $130,000 hush-money payment made by former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to former porn star Stormy Daniels in the weeks leading to the 2016 presidential election.
Earlier this week, Trump released a statement blasting former Manhattan D.A attorney Mark Pomerantz.
“The lead prosecutor for the corrupt Manhattan D.A.’s office worked as a lawyer for crooked Hillary Clinton and her law firm, left this Democrat firm with others to volunteer to ‘get Donald Trump’ at the D.A.’s office, for free,” Trump wrote.
“He quit in a huff when D.A. Bragg said there was no case here. He then unethically & illegally wrote & published a book about the case while it was going on. This is unheard of ‘stuff.’ The case is now completely compromised & reports are that Mark Pomerantz is in trouble,” Trump added.
Trump lawyer Joe Tacopina told MSNBC how Pomerantz actively went after Trump, compromising the case against him.
According to Tacopina, when Pomerantz became a DA prosecutor against Trump not long after quitting his law firm, he admitted in his book that he was not paid for his services, and would have paid to prosecute Trump.
