On Friday, the federal indictment against 2024 GOP frontrunner Donald Trump was unsealed.
The indictment, filed in the US District Court Southern District of Florida, charges Trump with 31 counts of willful retention of national defense information, one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, one count of withholding a document or record, one count of corruptly concealing a document or record, one count of concealing a document in a federal investigation, one count of scheme to conceal, and one count of false statements and representations.
The count of willful retention carries a maximum sentence of 10 years and a $250,000 fine; conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding a document, corruptly concealing a document, and concealing a document in a federal investigation each carry a 20-year maximum sentence and $250,000 fine; scheme to conceal and false statements and representations carry a maximum sentence of five years, as well as a $250,000 fine.
The indictment alleges that Trump stored in boxes information regarding national defense capabilities of the US and other nations, US nuclear programs, potential vulnerabilities of the US and its allies to military attack, and plans “for possible retaliation in response to a foreign attack.”
It alleges that Trump took “scores of boxes, many of which contained classified documents, to be transported to The Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida,” with the indictment adding that Trump “was not authorized to possess or retain those classified documents.”
The Mar-a-Lago club “was not an authorized location for the storage, possession, review, display, or discussion of the classified documents,” the indictment states, adding that boxes containing classified documents were found in locations including “a ballroom, a bathroom and shower, an office space, his bedroom, and a storage room.”
The indictment also lists Waltine Nauta, former White House valet and Trump personal aide, as a “co-conspirator,” charging him with one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding a document or record, corruptly concealing a document or record, concealing a document in a federal investigation, all of which carry a 20-year maximum sentence and $250,00 fine each, scheme to conceal, and false statements and representations, which carry a 5-year sentence and $250,000 fine each.
