MEMPHIS, Tenn. (TCD) — A 63-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly beating his 55-year-old fiancée to death with a floor lamp.
On Wednesday, March 15, at approximately 10 p.m., Memphis Police officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance on the 5000 block of Hornsby Drive, WHBQ-TV reports. From outside the home, officers reportedly heard a woman scream, “He’s got a gun!”
Officers knocked on the door multiple times as they heard the woman shout, and they tried to enter the home but failed, WREG-TV reports.
Eventually, Norris Lyles reportedly opened the door wearing a bloodstained shirt. According to WHBQ, when officers ordered him to get on the ground, Lyles replied, “You get on the ground!”
Lyles allegedly reached for a gun in his waistband, and officers Tased him.
Lyles was taken into custody, and he was reportedly transported to Regional One Health to treat his non-life-threatening injuries.
Upon further search of the home, officers located a female victim in the backyard suffering from lacerations to her head, and authorities found a blood-covered floor lamp at the scene that they believe Lyles used to beat her, WHBQ reports.
The female victim was reportedly transported to the hospital, where she died a few hours later.
Lyles was arrested and booked into the Shelby County Jail for second-degree murder and assault on a first responder, records show. His bond was set at $50,000, and he is scheduled to appear in court on March 21.
