Man allegedly fatally poisoned his wife’s food with fentanyl, set fire to their travel trailer

ELK GROVE, Calif. (TCD) — Police arrested a 48-year-old man last week for allegedly poisoning his 49-year-old wife’s food, killing her in January.

According to the Elk Grove Police Department, on Jan. 12, Glennis Smith called 911 to report that his wife of five years, Jennifer Smith-Floyd, was unconscious. Fire personnel and officers responded to his home and rendered medical aid to Smith-Floyd, but officials pronounced her dead at the scene.

Investigators found evidence of fentanyl in Smith-Floyd’s body and reportedly determined Smith had “intentionally put fentanyl in Smith-Floyd’s food on two occasions without her knowledge.”

Police allege the last and fatal poisoning occurred on the morning of Jan. 12, the day officers were called to Smith’s home.

According to police, the couple’s travel trailer caught fire at a storage facility a few months later, and investigators believe Smith set it ablaze.

Detectives obtained a warrant for Smith’s arrest and took him into custody on July 26. He was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges of murder, arson, and insurance fraud.

Although the suspect and victim were married, police said the couple had been living separately for several months before Smith-Floyd’s death.
