GILA COUNTY, Ariz. (TCD) — A 19-year-old man was recently arrested after his father and stepmother were found shot to death in their home several months ago.
According to a news release from the Gila County Sheriff’s Office, on Oct. 27, 2022, at approximately 10:53 a.m., deputies received a report of two individuals dead inside their Whispering Pines home, north of Payson. The deceased victims, Chase Stanfield, 39, and Gail Stanfield, 50, were initially discovered by Chase Stanfield’s sister, the Payson Roundup reports.
The victims’ two dogs were reportedly inside the home at the time of the shooting, but they were unharmed.
Detective Jaime Garrett told the Payson Roundup that authorities didn’t find a weapon, and there were no signs of a home invasion.
Upon further investigation, officials reportedly identified the victims’ son, Hunter Stanfield, as a suspect. The Sheriff’s Office said he was booked into the Gila County Jail on charges of first-degree murder.
According to the Payson Roundup, the victims’ son was living at his grandfather’s home at the time.
Officials did not release the suspect’s motive.
In a statement, Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd said, “I am thankful to the Detectives that have worked this case non-stop to follow all leads, collect and evaluate all evidence.”
Shepherd added, “This was a time-consuming investigation and the detective’s dedication to the community and justice should be commended.”
