HEBRON, N.Y. (TCD) — A 65-year-old homeowner is in custody after allegedly fatally shooting a 20-year-old woman who pulled up to the wrong address in upstate New York.
According to a press conference held by Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey J. Murphy, on the night of April 15, 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis and other individuals were together in a car searching for a friend’s home in a rural part of Hebron with poor cellular reception. They reportedly mistakenly drove up to a home on Patterson Hill Road.
As the group of friends were leaving the residence, Murphy said the homeowner, Kevin Monahan, allegedly came out onto his porch and fired two shots, one of which struck the vehicle.
According to Murphy, the group of friends drove approximately 5 miles away to Salem, New York, to call for help because a female inside the vehicle had been shot. Deputies responded and found the victim, later identified as Kaylin Gillis of Schuylerville, New York. Emergency crews arrived and performed CPR, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said deputies then responded to Monahan’s home on Patterson Hill Road. He was reportedly uncooperative and refused to leave his home and speak with officials. After several hours of a standoff, authorities took Monahan into custody with the assistance of the New York State Police Special Operation Response Team.
Monahan was arrested and transported to the Warren County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder.
Murphy called the incident a “tragedy.”
Gillis’ shooting death comes just days after Ralph Yarl, a Black teenager, was shot and wounded after walking up to the wrong home to pick up his siblings in Kansas City, Missouri.
