BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. (TCD) — A 16-year-old and 18-year-old were arrested over the weekend in connection with the shooting death of a 17-year-old star student and injury of another teen.
According to Haywood County Sheriff Billy Garrett Jr., on Friday, Feb. 10, at approximately 10 p.m., a 17-year-old student from Haywood High School was in a car with friends on Highway 19 when someone “suddenly started shooting at them.”
The victim was reportedly sitting in the back seat and was struck by “at least one bullet.” A 13-year-old also suffered a “shrapnel type injury.”
One day after the shooting, Garrett identified the 17-year-old victim as Christine Michael. On Feb. 11 at 5 p.m., deputies arrested 18-year-old Kevion Davis on suspicion of murder and took a 16-year-old male into custody the same day, also on murder charges. Garrett said he will be seeking three more counts of attempted first-degree murder for each defendant.
In a statement via the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office, Haywood County Schools Superintendent Amie Marsh called Christine Michael a “promising student who had tremendous plans for her future.”
Marsh wrote, “We are all deeply saddened by her passing and by the brilliant light that was extinguished Friday evening. Please keep her family in your thoughts.”
A friend shared a tribute by Haywood High School Principal Brittany Avent, who said Michael was the class president, the number one student in her grade, maintained a 4.0 GPA, competed on the softball team, and was in the process of finishing her associate’s degree before graduating high school.
Avent said, “Christine embodied everything you want in a student. But more importantly you could see her soul. It was perfect.”
