Ty Pennington, 58, is released from the ICU after he was hospitalized and intubated due to an abscess that was ‘closing off my airway’

Ty Pennington was officially released from the ICU after he was hospitalized for an abscess that was ‘closing off my airway’ which he candidly revealed in an Instagram post shared on Friday.

The former Extreme Makeover: Home Edition host, 58, notably attended the Barbie premiere in Los Angeles on Sunday, but two days later, was rushed to the ER and ‘intubated’ after he ‘could barely breathe.’

In a detailed caption along with photos of himself in a hospital bed, the star explained, ‘Turns out, that sore throat Ive had for the last month was actually an abscess which had grown so large it was closing off my airway.’

‘Next thing I know, I was intubated and flown to the ICU in Denver,’ but positively added, ‘Wednesday I had surgery and yesterday [Thursday] afternoon I was released from the ICU.’ 

According to Cleveland Clinic, a ‘peritonsillar abscess is a pus-filled pocket that forms near one of your tonsils’ and ‘can be serious, especially if it grows so large that it blocks your throat.’

At the beginning of his message to fans, Pennington wrote, ‘From the red carpet, to the ICU… this last week has been interesting!’ and added that he was ‘okay’ but ‘still recovering…’ 

He further explained that he felt ‘it looked weird that I hadn’t posted about my teams #BOTB VICTORY!!,’ referencing to his recent third season win on the HGTV real estate competition show titled, Battle On The Beach. 

‘To shed some light on why I was MIA… Sunday I hit the red carpet for @barbiethemovie, monday I flew to Colorado to start filming in Breckenridge and Tuesday morning I woke up at 4am and could barely breathe.’ 

After opening up about what had directly caused the health scare, Ty gave a special shoutout to the healthcare workers that were by his side every step of the way. 

‘Thank you so much to all the amazing staff at St. Anthony’s in Lakewood, CO & Summit Health in Frisco for taking such great care of me,’ and gave a few words of caution to his followers. ‘A great reminder to LISTEN to your body when it’s telling you something.’ 

Social media users jumped to the comment section to send love and well wishes to the TV personality on his road to recovery. 

Fellow HGTV star, Sherry Holmes, typed out, ‘Man!! Hope you’re all good! Just goes to show how precious everyday really is ❤️.’ 

Another fan expressed, ‘Hopefully you’ve just prevented this for many others who will now know to ask their doctors to check. I’m so happy to see you back on tv/HGTV. Heal well and fast! ❤️.’

Ty is known for starring on hit shows such as Trading Spaces, which he worked on as a carpenter from 2000 until 2003. However, after three years, he made the choice to exit the show. 

While talking to People earlier this year in February, Pennington opened up about the decision. ‘I had to quit that job because I knew I was worth more than I was being paid,’ he admitted. 

‘I took a real ballsy move, and I quit the best job I’d ever been given because I was sort of insulted,’ and added, ‘The thing about luck to me is sometimes something bad can happen that actually leads to something even bigger and better.’ 

Ty expressed that, ‘You think that it’s the end of the world, but it’s actually just a whole new page that’s being turned into a chapter.’ 

And it appears luck was indeed on his side as he further leapt into stardom when he began hosting the hit series, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, from 2004 until the show ended on its ninth season in 2012. 

The author has still been keeping busy working on projects such as HGTV’s Battle On The Beach, which follows the premise of, ‘Three skilled teams hit the beach to renovate identical beachfront properties,’ per the show’s official website. 

Ty also stars alongside Alison Victoria and Taniya Nayak, and he had the chance to celebrate his first win during season three which concluded earlier this month. 

In a separate post shared on Saturday, he took time to give a special tribute to his team: Ashley Basnight and Steve Lewis, and gushed that he was ‘SO flipping proud of’ the pair. 

He added, ‘ALL the teams worked so damn hard and should all be so proud. It was such a honor to work with Steve & Ashley- we clicked so well creatively.’

Tying the knot: The two lovebirds became engaged in July 2021 and tied the knot later that same year in November

‘It was so much fun to bounce ideas off of each other and push the creative limits. We are buddies for life. Cannot wait to see what ya’ll do!’ he concluded. 

When the television host is not busy working on sets, Ty enjoys spending quality time with his wife and social media manager, Kellee Merrell. The two lovebirds became engaged in July 2021 and tied the knot later that same year in November. 

Before meeting Kellee, the star admitted in an interview with People that his main focus had been work for many years. ‘I started working on Trading Spaces in 2000, and I really never stopped.’ 

‘When you’re never home for more than seven or 10 days at a time, it’s really hard to stay in any kind of a positive relationship.’ But when he crossed paths with Merrell, he admitted that, ‘I just knew I couldn’t let her go.’
