‘She’s iconic’: Ice Spice responds to bizarre comparisons to Princess Diana – as she is hailed as rap royalty amid her rapid rise to superstardom

Ice Spice sat down with Billboard this week and opened up about being compared to Princess Diana.

The Munch hitmaker, 23 – who recently cemented her place on the A-list by attending the Met Gala – spoke about becoming rap royalty this past year and how her fans have christened her the ‘People’s Princess.’

Speaking to Billboard, Ice Spice said she was initially confused by the comparison, but quickly embraced it because the late princess is so ‘iconic.’

The Bikini Bottom rapper said: ‘I saw all of my supporters being like, “She’s the People’s Princess! She’s Princess Diana!”‘

‘At first, I was confused. I was like, “Um, Princess Diana? Out of everybody?” But [then] I was like, “F–k it, she’s iconic.”‘

Ice also got candid about the double-edged sword of superstardom and described her emotions surrounding a scary incident in February when fans swarmed her DJ booth during a performance. 

‘I’m not going to lie,’ she confessed, ‘I was scared in that moment. I was kind of worried because we was a little outnumbered that night.

‘But looking back, I was like, “This is really a blessing being able to just see how excited people are to see me perform.”‘

The Gangsta Boo rapper went on admit that she is still adjusting to her success, sharing: ‘It’s been less than a year of me being famous, so it is definitely an adjustment.’

But Ice Spice is embracing her lofty title as the ‘People’s Princess’ – the iconic moniker given to Diana by the British Prime Minister Tony Blair after her tragic death in 1997. 

The rap phenom even has a hit song called Princess Diana that sees her rocketing bars alongside Nicki Minaj. 

Born in the Bronx as Isis Naija Gaston, the superstar’s ascent began in March 2021 when a video of her doing the Buss It challenge went viral on Twitter.

Ice quickly followed that up with her hit song Munch (Feelin’ U) the following year, and she soon released her blockbuster EP Like…? in January 2023.

Ice Spice earned the ultimate seal of approval this month when she attended the Met Gala as a special guest of Anna Wintour. 

Adorned with countless beads, the young rapper stole spotlight in her bright white custom-made Balmain gown.

Spice received the highly-coveted invitation after being hand-selected by the Vogue editor-in-chief, according to TMZ.

The site maintained that the fashion editor wanted Spice there to spice things up, as she is currently at the pinnacle of rap and pop culture.
