Colin Farrell transforms into The Penguin with heavy facial prosthetics as he gets back to work on The Batman spin-off series in NYC… after losing Best Actor at the Oscars

Colin Farrell was spotted back on set of the highly-anticipated Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, on Wednesday in New York City.

The actor, 46, looked unrecognizable as Gotham City mobster Oswald Cobblepot aka ‘The Penguin’ in heavy facial prosthetics by FX makeup artists Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine that completely transformed his handsome features.

Colin’s luscious brunette coif was replaced by a head of thinning brown hair with a receding hairline. 

The Irish hunk – who recently lost the Academy Award for Best Actor to The Whale’s Brendan Fraser – has been hard at work on the HBO show since February with The Batman director Matt Reeves executive producing the project with Dylan Clark.

For Wednesday’s shoot, Colin was seen in full costume as he hung out between takes with co-star Rhenzy Feliz, 25.

Costume designer Helen HuangHe dressed Colin in a blue plaid blazer with a bright red pocket square over a deep purple button-up shirt.

She completed the look with black slacks and shiny leather dress shoes.

He also rocked jewelry worthy of the ‘Gentleman of Crime,’ which included a gold ring with a large ruby stone, a gold watch and a gold chainlink bracelet.

Colin and Rhenzy were photographed chatting near production equipment with grape Slush Puppies in hand, which appeared to be props for the next scene.

The duo then made their way in front of the cameras and took a seat on a bench hunkered down beside a bustling NYC street.

For this particular scene, Colin layered a brown leather jacket over his purple plaid blazer.

Later, The Banshees of Inisherin star was seen with his elbow resting against a trolley filled with trunks and tarps before stepping into frame.

The Penguin – aka Oswald Cobblepot – will be the focal point of the eight-episode miniseries on HBOMax.

Details on the storyline of the project remain scarce, as it is anticipated that the timeline will be in sync with where the film left off, following the death of Batman nemesis Carmine Falcone.

The cast in the project includes Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni and Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, as well as Shohreh Aghdashloo, Michael Kelly and Deirdre O’Connell.

No release date has been set but it was confirmed last year that The Batman director Reeves would not be helming the production.

Colin recently told Variety that he was not aware of a potential miniseries about the villainous character while making the 2022 film, but knew there was ample material to work with creatively and aesthetically.

‘The only thing I had an idea was that I wasn’t nearly getting to explore the character as much as I wanted to,’ he said. ‘Because there was all this extraordinary work done by Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine and his team, and I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun, that we were getting to do the six or seven scenes that we did in the film. I was grateful for them, but I wanted more.’

Colin said that his transformation into The Penguin is what convinced The Batman producer Dylan Clark to bring the project to life.

‘Honest to god, any thought I had about an extended series was to do with Mike Marino’s work,’ he told the outlet. ‘I just knew there was so much to do with it — age it up, age it down.

‘He’s just such a genius, Mike, so it was his work that was the inspiration, really.’ 

Colin recently attended the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12, where he was nominated for Best Actor for his role in the acclaimed film The Banshees of Inisherin.

He was joined on the red carpet by his son Henry Tadeusz, 13. He shares Henry with ex Alicja Bachleda-Curuś. He also has 19-year-old son James with ex Kim Bordenave.

Colin co-starred with Brendan Gleeson and Kerry Condon, both of whom earned Best Supporting Actor/Actress nods.

Unfortunately, Colin lost the honor to Brendan Fraser. Meanwhile, Brendan lost to Everything Everywhere All At Once star Ke Huy Quan and Kerry lost to Everything Everywhere All At Once star Jamie Lee Curtis.

In total, The Banshees of Inisherin earned nine nominations but zero wins.

The film follows ‘two lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them,’ as per IMDb.

Colin did take home the Golden Globe for Best Actor for the role.
