The second film in the franchise was subsequently released to much praise in 2017.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was confirmed to have been in development that same year, when Gunn announced that he would be returning to write and direct the film.
However, the director was removed from the project due to the resurfacing of several controversial tweets he had made in the past, although he was eventually reinstated.
The upcoming entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is scheduled to be released on May 5.Â
