Anesthesiologists are one of the overall highest-paid in the field. Those who work as anesthesiologists specialize in giving anesthesia to patients for surgery.

In order to be hired in the profession, four years of undergrad are needed, plus four years of medical school, followed by a four-year residency program specializing in the practice, according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

2. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, $208,000

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in injuries to the head, neck, mouth, jaw and face. They mostly perform surgeries in these areas.

Like most jobs in the medical field, the road to becoming an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a long one. First, an aspiring individual must complete their four years of undergrad. The next step is four years of dental school. After that, they will need to complete a residency for four years, according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

3. Obstetrician and Gynecologist, $208,000

Obstetricians and gynecologists specialize in women’s health, but the two slightly vary. An obstetrician is the one who specializes in pregnancy and baby delivery, while gynecologists focus on the female reproductive system in general.

THE FIVE THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER DO IN YOUR CAREER

Many medical professionals assume the title of OB-GYN and can perform the tasks of an obstetrician and a gynecologist. It is possible to be a gynecologist and not an obstetrician, but one cannot be an obstetrician and not a gynecologist.

To pursue a career in this field, a bachelor’s degree must be earned, and then a medical degree. Each of these things takes at least four years. Then, a four-year residency is required.

4. Surgeon, $208,000

Surgeons perform surgery. They are the ones who lead the rest of the medical team during the procedure.

There are many different types of surgeons, with different specialties. Some examples are cardiothoracic, neurosurgeon, trauma and orthopedic. Some also choose to be trained in general surgery.

5. Orthodontist, $208,000

Orthodontic work is a dental specialty that focuses on fixing irregularities in the jaw and straightening teeth. This typically includes applying braces and providing retainers to keep teeth aligned, although there are many other tools used.

To become an orthodontist, four years of undergrad are needed, followed by four years of dental school. Then they must complete a residency program.

6. Physician, $208,000

Physicians are medical professionals who practice medicine. In a typical day, they’ll examine patients, prescribe medications and perform tests.

CAREER CHALLENGE: HOW DO YOU DECIDE BETWEEN TWO GOOD JOB OFFERS?

In order to be a physician, a bachelor’s degree is required, followed by a medical degree. A residency also may be needed, depending on the specialty, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics.

7. Psychiatrist, $208,000

Psychiatrists focus on the mental side of health. Aspiring psychiatrists typically need a bachelor’s degree, then four years of medical school and a four-year residency, according to Grand Canyon University.

8. Nurse Anesthetist, $195,610

Just like anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists also make a big paycheck. The two work hand in hand with very similar roles.

For this career, a bachelor’s is needed as well as one to three years of experience in critical care, according to Nurse Journal. Then, a graduate program is required.

9. Pediatrician, $170,480

Pediatricians are doctors who specialize in children’s health.

To be a pediatrician, the first step is to attend undergraduate school, followed by medical school. Before becoming a pediatrician, a residency is required for three years.

10. Dentist, $160,730

Next on the list hops back into medical professions with dentistry, another medical profession for oral conditions.

13. Marketing Manager, $135,030

While a financial manager focuses on the finances of a business, a marketing manager is the one who organizes all the marketing efforts of a company. They usually oversee a team of individuals responsible for implementing different marketing strategies.

The schooling needed to be a marketing manager is similar to that of a financial manager. The first step is getting a bachelor’s degree in marketing, getting a job within the field and possibly going for a graduate degree.

In addition to the jobs on the list, other professions that see high salaries time and time again are cardiologists, dermatologists, radiologists, pediatric surgeons, ophthalmologists, neurologists, chief executives and computer information systems managers.

14. Pilot, $134,630

While the medical field tops the highest-paid jobs list, pilots also earn high wages, but the path to becoming a pilot is very different.

To become a pilot, college isn’t needed, but pilot school is. An admissions flight then must be completed,

After successfully completing the flight, the next step is to apply for an FAA medical certificate, since there are various medical requirements that must be met. The requirements change, depending on the type of certificate, but one example of a possible requirement is 20/20 vision in each eye with correction or without.

Then, a FAA student pilot certificate is needed before flight training lessons start. These steps are all according to the ATP Flight School.

The amount and type of training needed differ, depending on what kind of certificate an aspiring pilot is aiming to maintain. Some choose to be private pilots, meaning they can fly a small aircraft for personal use. Then there are commercial pilots, who get paid for their flying services. Airline transport pilots fly airline planes for a living.

15. Financial Manager, $131,710

A financial manager is the go-to person for everything related to finances in a company.

To become a financial manager, a bachelor’s degree in a related discipline is needed, such as finance or accounting. Some students also choose to get a master’s of business administration (MBA) if they are pursuing this type of work.
